Art and Spirituality

Art and spirituality have always traveled hand in hand.

Sculpted Venus figurines dating to about 35,000 years ago have been found in various places throughout Europe, most likely related to prayers for pregnancy and successful childbirth.

Some of the earliest known paintings, the Paleolithic cave art (more than 17,000 years old) from Lascaux, France, and Altamira, Spain, are believed to represent entreaties to the gods for successful hunts and well-being.

The Ancient Greeks knew of the connection between art and spirituality and personified this connection in the nine Muses. These were all women, and all were the daughters of the union between the God Zeus and the Titan Mnemosyne. The Muses watched over not only the arts but also the sciences. Each one had a specific area of expertise.

In Europe, art soon became the province of the Church. Religious art abounded, meant to express loftier thoughts and feelings than the everyday. Most of the commissioned pieces were done for church structures. Think: Michelangelo, for example.

In non-Western cultures there was never any doubt that artistic expression -- like all other parts of life -- were connected to Spirit. Native American beaded moccasins, painted tepees, pottery decoration, and clothing were all adorned with symbolism and prayer-related images as well as scenes depicting sacred visions.

Many contemporary creative artists still work with symbolism, dream images, and spiritual purpose. And still speak of inspiration and motivation as coming from their Muse, which has evolved into a more personal image or energy. Art and spirituality remain closely related to this day.
