Soul Mates and Karma
It's not Always a Bouquet of Roses
Sometimes there's karma to work out with your soul mates. Even if you've shared many past lives, it may not be easy to be together this time around.
While you may think of the term soulmate as a love relationship, it can refer to any person with whom you've shared one or more past lives and with whom you retain karma, good or bad.
In fact, many people believe that our souls travel in groups, and that the same people reincarnate together, though not necessarily in every lifetime. Chances are, many of the people you now know you've known before. The relationships among these groups of souls, however, can change each time they meet. For instance, your brother in your present life may have been your father - or even your mother - in a past life; your wife two lifetimes ago can show up as a helpful neighbor now.
Do you think you recognize people in your present life from previous reincarnations? Who are they? Is there something specific that makes you believe this? Please share your thoughts in the form below.
There's always room for growth - personal, emotional, spiritual: growth of some sort is always the bottom-line purpose in each lifetime and the reason karma exists. Problems from past lives can be resolved in this life; relationships cleared in recent lifetimes can be enjoyed in new ways this time around.Of course, there can be karma from the past that shows up between you and a soul mate now. Whether or not you choose to resolve it is up to you. Your choice might depend on one or more of the following: - your present circumstances
- your soul's goals in this life
- other priorities
- other relationships
- your soulmate's present goals
- free will (of each of you and others in your life)
- amount of emotional energy available
- awareness of the karma's origin
10 Trouble Spots to Watch for Regarding Soul Mates and Karma
- Relationships change. While you may have been close with soul mates in a past life, the same relationships may not be appropriate in your present reincarnation. For instance, you might have been married in a number of past lives to the soul who is your brother or sister now. Any intimate feelings that carry over are - obviously - inappropriate.
- Mistaken identity. To the mind, different things may look the same. Someone with a slight limp to the left and way of tossing their head might be confused with a soulmate from a previous life who had similar physical quirks. They may not be the same person, and treating them as if they were your soulmate might not have good consequences.
- Emotional overload. Resolving past life karma may be emotionally draining. It's difficult enough to keep up with emotions that arise out of your present life and circumstances. Adding unsatisfied feelings from past lives can overwhelm you if they show up at the same time you're dealing with present issues.
- Leftover emotions. On the other hand, there may be leftover karma with your soul mates that cannot be resolved in this lifetime. You can end up with a deep sense of frustration if this happens.
- Free will - yours or your soulmate's - may get in the way. Even if you both recognize each other, either of you may choose to ignore your connection. If only one of you makes this decision, the other could feel deeply rejected.
- Stuck in old roles. You may not be able to break out of an old relationship role with a soulmate, especially if it happened in a recent reincarnation and remained unresolved. It would be interesting to explore the past lives of parents who parentify their young children, for instance (ie: the children make the decision, take on
the leadership roles in the family while still too young to do so). Do you have a friend or lover who insists on treating you like their mother? There are a number of issues that find their way into psychotherapy sessions that might be better examined in past life regression sessions.
- Instant reaction. You can meet someone in your present life and take an instant or intense dislike for them - and they may not have done anything to deserve it. This reaction can indicate an unsettled relationship from a past life. Since not everyone believes in reincarnation, it can be difficult if not impossible to talk through these feelings with this kind of soulmate. Sometimes your own feelings are released and resolved when you recognize the origin of the tension.
- Present priorities. Other agendas can get in the way of being with soul mates you feel drawn to. I heard the story of two people who met and instantly recognized each other as soul mates - possibly even Twin Flame soulmates. They were just getting reacquainted in this life when his ex-girlfriend called to say she was pregnant with his child. Both realized they would have to return to their loving connection in future lives, but could not experience that now, for the sake the child.
- Memories vs assumptions. When you're with one of your soul mates in this life, it's easy to make assumptions - and mistakes - about each other based on your previous knowledge and connections. Each time around, our souls change somewhat. We're never exactly the same person we were before - or will be in future lives. Treating someone as who they "used to be" can cause confusion or even emotional pain in the present.
- Losing self. It's easy to get "lost" in each other when you're with your True Flame soulmate. You know each other so well; you're in so much agreement; you can finish each other's sentences. At first, these connections can draw you closer. After some time, though, you each need to retain your sense of self, stay true to your separate soul's goals and personal truth, and maintain your own centers. Being too close can impede your growth.

Regressions Can Help
Past life regressions and coaching sessions can help resolve many of these issues.- Clarifying the karma you have with a soulmate informs you about what needs resolution.
- Once you know the origin of a problem you have with another individual you're better able to deal with it.
- Being able to separate issues from past lives from those in your present also strengthens communication and other problem-solving strategies.
- Seeing what roles you played in previous lifetimes with the important people in your life now can deepen your present relationships.
