For instance, my birthstone is sapphire, so the color would be a deep, saturated blue. Buying someone a holiday gift with their birthstone - or something with the same color - means you care.

For those interested in astrology, especially as it relates to reincarnation, a gift with their birthstone or even its color has great significance. To begin with, you've paid enough attention - and know enough about them - to remember when their birthday occurs. Second, you made an extra effort to present them with a gift that is highly personal.

By the way, there's an official United States birthstone list, by month. Other lists are based on the zodiac. There's some consensus, but not total agreement, matching colors to months, so if you're a member of a culture or live in a part of the world that has its own methodology for matching birth stone colors and birthdays - go with it!

Here's the list from the American National Association of Jewelers. In England, try the British National Association of Goldsmiths - they have a similar but not exactly the same list of colors.

Remember that zodiac signs start about the 21st or 22nd of the month before and end about the same time.
