Karma and the Seeming Unfairness of Life by: Batya
What great questions! I've asked them myself many times, then had to sit and remember what I know about karma, past lives, and spiritual growth.
By observing another person's life from a distance, there's no way to understand their soul's journey. Are they reaping the rewards of previous lifetimes where they've done good deeds or sacrificed themselves for the betterment of the world? Or are they sowing bad karma for themselves in their future lives? There really is no way of knowing this unless you have shared their soul's history.
It's hard to step back and stop judging. I struggle with this as much as anyone else does. And it's too easy to say, Oh, they must have been really bad, or really good, in a past life.
When someone has "bad luck" in this lifetime, it isn't necessarily due to being "bad" in a previous life. Sometimes it is, sometimes it's the Universe providing them with the opportunity to choose better, a chance for their soul to grow.
And sometimes it's the Universe simply saying, "You're on the wrong path for your soul's growth in this life...take another look, choose something else." You may not even have karma clearing to do...it may be fully this-life-based and you "just" need to pay attention.
If I've learned anything from many years as a spiritual healer and as a psychotherapist, it's that we really can't know (and therefore can't judge) another person's spiritual/soul path. It's hard enough to know our own!!
As far as paying karmic debt goes: take a look into your past lives with the intent of karma clearing (take a look at the Karma Clearing page) to get the information you need. Then make changes in your life accordingly.
There's nothing written in stone for spiritual growth. You can speed it up or slow it down as you choose.
I hope that helped answer your questions. If it didn't please let me know.
