Inspirational Movies

"Sometimes enlightenment
comes with a
bowl of popcorn."
-- Batya Deene

If someone on your holiday gift list (or birthdays, anniversaries, or any other celebration) is spiritual and also loves films, gifting them with inspirational movies is an easy choice and a sure-win way to go. Just order up one or more of these DVDs, add an inspirational card, wrap it up, and wait for the Thank You that will come to you.

My top choice for those who love spiritual movies would be a subscription to Spiritual Cinema Circle (click on the box to get more information and purchase).

Spiritual Cinema Circle

Usually the only inspirational films that make it to your local theater are those from studios that see a financial gain in them. These are few and far between. Independent and small filmmakers rarely have their films on the large screen - except for film festivals.

Spiritual Cinema Circle travels the world to find the best films with spiritual value from festivals and independent movie-makers. They choose stories that make a difference, messages that open hearts, exploration of possibility, and celebrations of what it is to be human.

With a subscription you or your friend receive:

  • 4 films on a monthly CD - which you keep
  • Access to a members-only online community
  • Original movies often before they premiere elsewhere
  • Members-only savings on a list of past films
  • Cinema news
  • Meet the filmmakers
  • Insider access to local spiritual cinema communities

The cost is $21/month plus shipping. There are three and four month subscriptions as well as annual.

A great way to wrap the subscription notice as a gift is to attach it to a box or bag of popcorn -- each movie contains more than a "kernal of truth!"

Individual Inspirational Movies

If you're thinking of purchasing a single DVD rather than a subscription to a movie club, I've listed some of my own favorite inspirational movies here. Just click on the box to read more about it and place your order - for a gift or for yourself.

See below the chart for a brief description of each film.

Oh My God
Expanded Edition

  • Oh My God. Among others, Ringo Starr, Seal, Hugh Jackman, Sir Bob Geldof, and David Copperfield attempt to answer the world-wide question, "What is God?" Go along for a ride of passion, curiosity, self-reflection, imagination, and hope.

  • The Ultimate Gift. Bring a tissue and an open heart to this film as you follow a young man's journey along the dying wishes of his grandfather. Eventually, he learns about the real priorities in life - but it's a tough and touching road he travels.

  • Mystic Lands. Travel through the world with narrator Edward James Olmos as the film visits 13 of the most sacred places on Earth. More than a lesson in geography, the spiritual practices of each area is explored. This is truly a spiritual world journey in a box.

  • Why Walk When You Can Fly? Isha Judd shares stories and parables that encourage spiritual transformation and personal responsibility. (subtitles in Spanish and Portuguese)

  • Ram Dass: Fierce Grace. I've met Ram Dass on a number of occasions and always his heart has been as open as his brilliant mind. The documentary film by Mickey Lemle reviews the life and times of this long-time spiritual teacher and guru.

  • The Flowering of Human Consciousness: Everyone's Life Purpose. A journey to uncovering your inner self with Eckhart Tolle. The film digs deep, and requires multiple viewings to get the most from it.

  • Tuning In: Spirit Channelers in America. Bob Doyle, featured teacher in "The Secret" said of this film: "This is a truly remarkable film. Beautifully shot, and absolutely riveting. Thought-provoking, inspiring, challenging, controversial, and filled with incredible wisdom."

  • What the Bleep!? Down the Rabbit Hole. If you or your friend haven't seen "What the Bleep Do We Know!?" this is an essential, thought-provoking, mind-expanding, and spiritually inspiring film. With Marlee Matlin.

  • The Spirit of the Serpent. A film about the energy of the Earth, the places around the world that celebrate Earth Energy since the early days of humanity, and the metaphysics that's now lending to credence to what people always knew.
