Smart Goals
...and Smarter Goals
There's a predominant view of goal setting based on the Smart goals system. It's used by most life coaches, even most business coaches. I like the approach, too, but I think the system misses some very serious points.
Actually, let me rephrase that. The system is great for setting goals. But my "smarter goal system is great for attaining goals. Following is a review of the differences, and why I adapt the Smart goal setting system and use the Smarter goals approach when we work together in your past life regressions and future lives progressions.
What Does "Smart Goals" Mean?
- S = specific
- M = measurable
- A = attainable
- R = relevant
- T = time bound
Specific.
Work your goals down from their final, distant destination to small, doable steps. Formulate the steps so that they are very specific, and can be checked off your list as they're accomplished.
Measurable.
This means that you define the steps toward your goals in ways that you can measure. You will know, without question, when they're completed. For instance, "I'm walking west" is a non-measurable goal because you can go west forever (sure, you'll be traveling in circles, getting a great tour of the planet, but you'll never reach your destination). "I'm going 25 miles east," is measurable. You'll know when you get there.
Attainable.
Following the approach of Smart goals, most coaches insist that you choose "attainable," or "realistic" goals. You won't get disappointed this way. Keep things in your life in a foreseeable box. Be successful. I have a number of problems with this. For instance, who gets to define "attainable"? If people hadn't sailed across the flat earth to prove it's round - an "unobtainable" objective at the time, most of us in the Americas wouldn't be here. If the space program didn't set out to accomplish an "unattainable" goal, we wouldn't have gotten into space at all. The goal at times is to bite off more than you can chew - and then figure out how to get there. Sometimes success isn't about getting to a place, but being on the road to success. Reaching for the "impossible" isn't always bad. You can even hum the song as you go..."To dream the impossible dream..." Exploration, invention, great leaps of understanding - all these are "unattainable" until they're done. After all, we, as humans, don't really get to define "impossible." Improbable, yes; we can use statistics to determine that. But impossible - that's not up to us. Remember: Sometimes failure is success in disguise. Just don't let it deter you from continuing on your own road to success.
Relevant.
Relevant means that your goal has some importance in your life or the lives of those around you. According to Smart goals, the steps you set to get to your objectives need to be related to that goal, of course. The more closely linked to your goal, the closer you'll get to success. Here I come again, with the idea of reincarnation thrown into the mix. Relevant to what? Or when? There are times when the shortest distance between two points is not a straight line (see
mugs, magnets, T-shirts and more
with this saying!). Sometimes you need to take steps just for the experience of them, as opposed to the goal. Surprises in life aren't usually on the most relevant, straightest path. For some people avoiding surprise is a good thing. There are lots of folks who don't like surprises. If that's you, keep the steps to your goals very, very relevant. In past life work, though, you often don't know what's most relevant to you. There's that old karma rearing its head, setting up detours on your road to success. What looks irrelevant might be the most important step you can take to achieve your soul's goals. Trust what's most relevant to your "gut" and your intuition. Listen to your own inner wisdom.
Time Bound.
In the Smart goals system, you choose a time frame to accomplish your goals as you set them. "I will be President by 2020," or "I'll reach enlightenment by the time I'm 20 in my next life." While I agree that setting a time for the small, specific steps toward your goal is often essential, I'm not a real believer in pinning my goals to a calendar date. There are goals for which time frames work well. For instance, "I will graduate college in four years." Or "I will write my next eBook by the end of April." As long as you're able to renegotiate with yourself and not feel guilty or shamed if you don't get there when you think you "should," set time-bound limits to your objectives. But remember that free will - yours and everyone else's - comes into play constantly. If something not in your control comes along, you may have to change the time limits you've chosen. Once you're working with your reincarnations and have experienced a few past lives, you'll learn that time is not quite as linear as we believe it to be. You will recognize karma from your past, or crossroads that determine your future, as it shows up in your present. You'll find that after past life regression sessions you may jump ahead faster on some goals than you had ever imagined possible as you compete some karma cleansing. And you'll want to devote additional linear time to delve into spiritual issues that might slow the process of attaining your goals. You might even learn some things from your reincarnations that inspire you to change the goals you've already set for yourself.
What does "Smarter Goals" Mean?
The S-M-A-R-T part means the same as in the Smart goals system described above. But I've added two letters to the mix, which I believe to be essential to success in personal development and spiritual growth - really, with any goals you choose.- E = emotion and energy
- R = reasons (= motivation)
How the Smarter Goals System Applies to Your Past Life Regressions and Future Lives Progression Work
- First of all, your intention is essential to the success of your reincarnation sessions. (Or to any of your goals.) Past Lives Coaching dedicates itself to helping you not only re-experience your past lives and get a peek at your possible future life, but also in applying that information so you can better set and accomplish your goals in your present life.
To get the most out of your reincarnation sessions, you need a clear and focused purpose to them. Any spiritual work (or any work in more than the three dimensions of our everyday lives) requires intention. Intention is fueled by your emotion. Emotion is fueled by your motivation. Motivation is determined by the reasons you have to take actions.Without emotion and motivation, you accomplish very little, be it spiritually related or about any of your other goals.
- Secondly, emotion and reasons (or motivation) sets up your reticular activating system. (If you've studied The Secret, you're familiar with this function of the mind.) The RAS is the human mind's GPS. Lock in where you're going (your objectives), add gas (emotion and motivation, or intention), put some weight ont he gas pedal (take action)...and off you go on your road to success!
- Third, both emotion and motivation (or deeply felt reasons) reside in the right brain. The Smart goals system is a left-brain activity all the way. How far do you think you'll get using only half your brain?

In Western societies we often forget that we have two sides to the brain. The left side is logical, data-oriented, number-loving, list-making. The right side is more creative, open, artistic, emotional. We tend to do things lopsided, focusing on the left side of the brain, where facts and proof and dimensions reign. That's one of the main reasons we end up with those unfulfilled goals lists in the back of our notebooks, drawers, and filing cabinets. We're only using half of our abilities to figure out our goals, and - even worse - to try to attain them. Taking the time to engage the right brain - imagining how it will be when we fulfill our goals; or becoming emotionally charged about them as we set them in those Smart goals steps - gives us the edge in getting where we want to go. Because hypnosis takes us into a state of brain-waves associated with right-brain activity, past life regressions and future lives progressions are already using more of the brain than the Smart goals system. We create a cycle of emotion, energy, visualization, and motivation that you can then apply to your goals. If you'd like to learn more about using both sides of the brain in achieving your goals,
